Prenatal Care Only (4-6 visits)

What it is

Pregnancy care is normally billed as one bundle covering everything from the first booking visit to the postpartum check. When a practice sees a patient for only a portion of the pregnancy, that bundle does not apply, and the prenatal visits are counted and billed as a block instead. This particular code is the middle tier: a short course of four to six routine prenatal visits. It is not a different kind of care from the care inside a full package — it is the same routine visits, counted.

Why it is done

• Because a patient moved, changed insurance, or switched practices in the middle of a pregnancy, leaving each practice with only part of the course
• Because care started late in the pregnancy, so only a handful of routine visits happened before delivery
• Because the delivery was handled by a different group than the one doing the prenatal visits

What to expect

A routine prenatal visit is short. Blood pressure and weight are recorded, the abdomen is measured to track growth, the baby's heartbeat is listened for, and hands and feet are checked for swelling. Routine tests are done at the points in pregnancy where they belong. Visits are usually monthly early on and become more frequent later. Only these routine checks count toward the tally behind this code — ultrasounds, laboratory panels and specialised testing are billed as their own items.

Questions worth asking

• How is the visit count arrived at, and what happens to the price if the actual number lands just above or below this band?
• Which parts of my pregnancy care fall outside this charge — ultrasounds, blood panels, glucose testing, genetic screening?
• If I stay with this practice through the delivery after all, will these visits be rolled into a global maternity charge, and will the separate billing be reversed?
• Has my plan been told which practice is handling which part of the pregnancy, so that two practices' claims do not overlap?
