Self-Care and Home Skills Training (each 15 minutes)

What it is

Rehabilitation is largely about teaching people to manage daily tasks again — eating, bathing, using the bathroom, dressing, moving between a chair and a bed. This code covers the therapy time spent training exactly those skills, plus the wider household ones: preparing a meal, doing laundry, managing medication, using a phone. Much of the training is about method rather than strength, because the task often has to be done a new way: a shirt put on the weak arm first, a long-handled reacher instead of bending, a shower seat and a grab bar instead of standing on a wet floor. Advice about arranging the home for function and safety, and instruction in using splints, wheelchairs, and other equipment, belongs here too. The unit is fifteen minutes of direct contact.

Why it is done

• To restore independence in dressing, washing, toileting, and eating after a stroke, an injury, or a major illness
• To teach one-handed or seated methods when a limb or standing tolerance will not fully return
• To train the use of adaptive equipment and assistive devices in the tasks they are meant for
• To prepare a household for a safe discharge home, including what needs to be moved, added, or removed

What to expect

Sessions often take place in a clinic kitchen or mock bathroom set up for the purpose, and sometimes in the patient's own home. Patients are commonly asked to bring their own clothing and equipment, because the point is whether the method works with what they actually own. A family member or caregiver may be included, since the training frequently has to transfer to whoever helps. The therapist will ask detailed questions about the layout of the home — where the steps are, which side of the bed is against the wall — and the answers change what is practised.

Questions worth asking

• If the therapist visits my home for this training, is travel or a home assessment billed on top of the treatment units?
• Any equipment recommended — shower seat, reacher, raised toilet seat — is usually a separate durable medical equipment purchase. Is it covered, and through which supplier?
• If a caregiver is trained alongside me, is that time billed as part of my visit or not at all?
• Does my plan treat occupational therapy and physical therapy as one shared visit allowance or two separate ones?
