Codes & billing

DRG (Diagnosis-Related Group)

A code that classifies an inpatient hospital stay by diagnosis and treatment, used mainly by Medicare to set a single flat payment for the whole admission.

Example

DRG 470 ("major joint replacement, no complications") might pay a flat $19,500 for the entire hip-replacement admission, similar in spirit to a case rate.
